Ragtime Banjo Series
BANJOISTS ! TABLATURE.
The difference between tablature and musical notation is that tablature tells you what to do with your fingers, but notation tells you what sounds to play. From a practical point of view this means that given a piece of music in notation, a player can perform it on any instrument, assuming that it has the necessary range of sounds. A piece in tablature can only be played on an instrument which has the correct tuning for that particular tablature. The tuning is often shown at the beginning of the tablature, or is the tuning normally used for that instrument.
For the five-string banjo, tablature is shown on five horizontal lines, one above the other, just like a normal notation staff. The top line represents the first string and the bottom line represents the short fifth string.
The position of the fingers of the left hand on the frets is shown by numbers, so that a ‘0’ indicates the open string, a ‘1’ the first fret, and so on.
Although playing from tablature avoids the need to learn the names of notes on the staff, it is still necessary to learn how the duration of sounds is shown, and the method is borrowed from notation, where the stem of a note can be plain, or have one, two or three small ‘tails’. The plain stem indicates a quarter note, (called a crotchet in England); one tail shows an eighth note (quaver); which lasts for half the time of a crotchet; two tails show a sixteenth note, (semi-quaver); and three tails show a thirty-second note, (demi-semi-quaver). There are also two longer notes; a half note, or minim; and a whole note, or semi-breve.
The method of presentation in both tablature and musical notation also helps the notation reader, who is able to check the tablature staves to confirm which strings are being used where there may otherwise be some doubt.
